The UK government has advised citizens to stockpile at least three days’ worth of food and water to prepare for extreme weather events, cyberattacks, and security threats that could arise from other states.
elchi reports that the government’s “Be Ready” campaign calls on families to be prepared for natural disasters, cyberattacks, and potential disruptions to critical infrastructure.
The campaign recommends that each person stockpile essential supplies, including 9 liters of drinking water per person (calculated at 3 liters per day for three days), non-perishable food items, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, blankets, cash, and a battery-powered radio.
It has been noted that in emergencies, electricity, water, telephone, and internet services may be interrupted, and supply chains could be disrupted.
“The threats are not just hypothetical, they are real.”
Speaking at a defense industry facility in Telford, UK Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting stated that the country needs to be better prepared for threats such as natural disasters, complex cyberattacks, and state-sponsored terrorism.
Warning that Russia and other hostile states could target critical infrastructure used in daily life, Streeting noted: “These threats are not just hypothetical, they are real. They are increasingly manifesting not just elsewhere, but here too.”
Streeting emphasized the importance of families and businesses planning in advance how they will respond to potential crises. Speaking on the BBC’s “Question Time” program, the minister said the government’s aim is not to frighten the public, but to “make people aware, not alarmed.”
Stressing that these preparations are not a response to any specific threat, Streeting explained that stockpiling food and water could be useful in situations such as power outages or the failure of payment systems due to cyberattacks.
UK Security Minister Dan Jarvis also stated that by taking simple precautionary measures, citizens can enable emergency response teams and rescuers to prioritize those most in need of assistance during a crisis. Jarvis noted that the government’s initiative aims to strengthen the country’s resilience to crises, adding that similar preparedness campaigns are being conducted in France, Ireland, and the Netherlands.
Following the discovery of a critical security vulnerability in the PHP programming language, used by numerous websites worldwide, 32 UK government-related websites temporarily suspended operations as a precautionary measure.
