Relations between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are based on centuries-old friendship and brotherhood, and are of a strategic partnership nature.
elchi reports that this was stated by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev during his speech at the meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State held in Turkmenbashi.
The head of state first thanked the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov for the traditional hospitality.
President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that every visit to Turkmenistan leaves a deep impression:
“It is clear how dynamically the country is developing. The successes of brotherly Turkmenistan make us sincerely happy”.
The President of Azerbaijan expressed satisfaction with the intensive nature of high-level contacts between the two countries. He recalled that he visited Turkmenistan in August 2025, the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan visited Azerbaijan twice last year, and the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov paid a state visit to Azerbaijan in June of this year.
“These contacts have given an additional impetus to bilateral relations and opened up new opportunities for expanding cooperation in many areas,” the head of state noted.
President Ilham Aliyev also stated that the 35th anniversary of the Commonwealth of Independent States is being celebrated this year. According to him, over the past years, the CIS has proven itself as a necessary platform for continuing political dialogue, developing mutually beneficial cooperation, and strengthening relations between member states.
