NASA Searches for Secret Underground Caves on the Moon

NASA is implementing the GIMLI project to study underground caves and lava tunnels, which are of great importance for a future lunar base.
elchi reports that the giant sinkholes observed on the lunar surface are not just simple holes, but are believed to open into vast underground voids created by past volcanic activity. The ‘Marius Hills’ sinkhole, discovered by Japan’s ‘Kaguya’ satellite in 2009, will be the main focus of this research. Scientists are trying to determine if this sinkhole is connected to giant tunnels formed by ancient lava flows.
Potential for Natural Shelters
The discovery of underground caves will provide important clues about the Moon’s history and volcanic past. These studies, using similar examples from Earth, will help in better understanding the Moon’s geological structure.
At the same time, these caves can serve as vital shelters for future astronauts visiting the Moon. Extreme temperatures, harmful radiation, and micrometeorites on the lunar surface pose serious threats to astronauts. Underground tunnels can provide natural protection, eliminating the need for artificial shelters.
Scanning the Subsurface with GIMLI
The GIMLI project, managed by the Planetary Science Institute, is being developed in collaboration with Honeybee Robotics and the Norwegian Space Agency. Equipment planned to be sent to the Moon under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services program will conduct a comprehensive scan of the surface. Using advanced ground-penetrating radars, seismic sensors, and gravimeters, the size and structure of subsurface voids will be mapped. The data obtained will clarify whether these hidden tunnels are large enough to accommodate astronaut crews.
