The Colombian government has officially announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with Iran.
“Elchi” reports that the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the information regarding the severance of ties with Iran in a statement published on the “X” (formerly Twitter) social media platform.
In its written statement, the Ministry cited the Tehran administration’s “alleged ties to terrorist and drug trafficking organizations” as the reason for the severance of diplomatic relations.
The Ministry stated that the decision was made on September 19 and was taken “in response to issues of national and regional security, as well as the fight against international crime.”
The statement also noted that this decision is related to other incidents that have undermined Colombia’s trust in Iranian officials.
The Ministry’s post emphasized that these incidents include “Iran’s human rights violations, military activities outside conflict zones in the Middle East, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and the restriction of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspections of nuclear facilities.”
