Lithuania intends to transition to universal military conscription by 2030

Lithuania intends to transition to universal conscription for military service by 2030.

“Elchi” reports, citing LRT, that this was stated by Marius Čiurlionis, the advisor to the President of Lithuania on national security issues, following a general defense forum.

According to him, the National Coordination Council for General Defense, led by the country’s president, intends to appeal to the State Defense Council with a proposal to instruct the Ministry of National Defense and the Lithuanian Armed Forces to assess the possibility of accelerating the transition to universal conscription within the next few months.

Currently, the transition to conscription, which is intended to be largely universal in nature, is planned to be completed by approximately 2035.

Čiurlionis noted that a decision regarding the possibility of organizing universal conscription by 2030 could be made by the end of 2026.
