More emphasis on reading skills in graduation and entrance exams has just begun to be implemented.
“Elchi” reports that Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev stated this during the presentation of the results of PISA 2025 – Programme for International Student Assessment.
The minister noted that it is precisely after this process that improvements in results are being observed:
“We are working on language rules in our textbooks. We consider our education system to be exam-content oriented rather than exam-oriented. In none of our pedagogical institutions is reading taught as a separate subject. We do not accept it as a separate field. Reading poems by Azerbaijani poets is not reading literacy; it is a separate direction. When we introduce any innovation into a textbook, society sometimes perceives it as an insult to itself. This is because the current children have not been familiar with a reading textbook.”
The minister concluded by noting that there is no problem with the Azerbaijani language. Thus, language skills and reading literacy are different fields, and they should not be confused.
