Peru has joined the “American Shield” alliance, created by the US for the purpose of joint defense against transnational and regional threats.
“Elchi” reports that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated this in an article written for the “El Comercio” newspaper in connection with his tour of South American countries.
“As for Peru, we look forward with great optimism to beginning work with Keiko Fujimori’s new government to carry our shared 200-year history into the future. Now, welcoming Peru, a major non-NATO ally, into the ‘American Shield,’ we are synchronizing our efforts to protect our hemisphere from transnational and regional threats,” Rubio wrote.
Against the backdrop of growing cooperation with China in the region, he urged countries to prioritize partnership with the US: “Every country in our region has the sovereign right to choose its own partners. We only ask that this choice be made in conditions of absolute transparency and that all its terms be open to the public.”
It should be noted that the “American Shield” is an alliance of the US and a number of Latin American countries that fight against drug cartels and conduct joint military operations.
