Japanese fighter jets have conducted interception flights against Chinese reconnaissance aircraft over the disputed waters of the East China Sea.
elchi reports that, according to a statement by the Japanese Ministry of Defense, flights of Chinese “Y-9” type reconnaissance aircraft were recorded yesterday near the coasts of Nagasaki and Okinawa prefectures in the south of the country.
The agency stated that in response, fighter jets of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) were scrambled to carry out interception flights in the region.
The statement notes that the “Y-9” aircraft off the coast of Okinawa changed course toward the northeast, then changed their route again south of the Danjo Islands, heading toward mainland China.
“No violation of Japanese airspace was recorded during the incident,” the statement emphasized.
The Ministry of Defense declared that Japan will continue to remain vigilant and alert regarding China’s actions.
The statement also included a map prepared by the ASDF, which reflects the route of the Chinese “Y-9” aircraft over the disputed waters of the East China Sea.
Disputed islands in the East China Sea, continental shelf issues, air defense identification zones, as well as oil and natural gas exploration and production areas periodically become sources of disagreement between China, Japan, and South Korea.
