Finland has completed the construction of a 200-kilometer security fence on its eastern border.

The construction of the fence was finished on Monday, September 7, near the Nuijamaa border crossing point.
Finland’s Minister of the Interior, Mari Rantanen, did not rule out that the fence could be extended further in the future.
“At a certain stage, it will be assessed whether there is a need for more extensive fencing. We need financial support, especially from the EU, allocated to eastern member states to fund such projects,” Rantanen stated.
At the same time, the minister emphasized that a fence alone is not enough to ensure the security of the eastern border. According to her, the Border Security Act, which is proposed to be extended for another two years, plays an important role in preventing illegal entry.
Rantanen also stated that since the “threat situation has not changed,” Finland does not plan to open the border crossing points on the eastern border for now.
