During the past period of 2026, the rescuers of the State Service for Control over Small Vessels and Water Rescue of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES) recovered the bodies of 54 people from the water.
This was reported by the MES in response to an inquiry from “Elchi”.
It was noted that 73 people were rescued during the beach season, and a total of 79 people have been rescued since the beginning of the year.
“Out of the 79 people rescued, 73 were saved specifically during the beach season. No drowning incidents resulting in death were recorded in the areas under the service’s supervision. In addition, during the past period of the current year, the bodies of 54 people in total were recovered from the water and handed over to the relevant authorities.”
The agency stated that investigations show most drowning incidents occur due to the use of non-beach areas, entering the sea in windy weather or while intoxicated, and leaving children and teenagers unattended.
“Especially in the regions, the use of rivers, lakes, irrigation canals, and other water bodies not intended for swimming is also one of the main causes of drowning,” the agency noted.
The Ministry advises the public, especially parents, to use only beaches where rescuers are on duty. Furthermore, it is specifically emphasized that children should only be on the beach accompanied by adults and should not be left unattended. According to the MES, the safer hours for recreation at beaches are from 09:00 to 20:00. Entering the water after dark is considered dangerous.
