Five European Union countries – Germany, Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands, and Greece want the deportation of illegal migrants to third countries to be possible as early as 2027.
“Elchi” reports that the ministers of migration affairs of the respective countries reached an agreement on this at a meeting held in Copenhagen.
Ministers hope to reach an agreement on the establishment of deportation centers in third countries by the end of the year. It is intended that migrants whose asylum applications have been rejected but who cannot be deported to their home countries for various reasons will be sent to these centers. Unaccompanied minors will be an exception.
Ministers have not disclosed which specific countries they are negotiating with regarding the establishment of deportation centers.
Countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan have been mentioned in the media. However, Central Asian countries have stated that no such issue has been discussed.
Human rights organizations and the Council of Europe are criticizing this initiative, expressing concern that human rights could be violated. In their view, sending asylum-seeking migrants to countries with which they have no ties could create serious legal and humanitarian problems.
