Meeting held with NATO delegation at ANAMA

Samir Poladov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of the Mine Action Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (ANAMA), held a meeting with a delegation led by Ms. Eirini Lemos-Maniati, Head of the NATO Arms Control, Disarmament and WMD Non-Proliferation Centre.

This was reported to “Elchi” by ANAMA.

It was stated that during the meeting, discussions were held on the current state of cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO in the field of humanitarian mine action, the importance of support from international partners in this direction, the progress of the project on the application of innovative methods of humanitarian mine action within the framework of the Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme, as well as Azerbaijan’s participation in other current and future projects within this programme aimed at applying new generation high technologies and innovative methods to mine action activities.

Samir Poladov stated that since November 2020, 437 Azerbaijani citizens have been killed or injured as a result of mine incidents. He emphasized that mines pose a serious obstacle to the return of former internally displaced persons to their native lands, delay restoration and reconstruction work, and cause significant humanitarian, economic, and environmental consequences.

In addition, Samir Poladov informed the NATO delegation about the operations carried out by ANAMA, the activities of the Goygol Training Center, as well as ANAMA’s international partnerships in the field of humanitarian mine action.

The meeting is another indicator of the long-term cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO in the field of humanitarian mine action. This cooperation covers the clearance of mines and other explosive remnants of war, the application of new technologies in humanitarian mine action activities, and the successful implementation of many joint projects.
