Australia has issued a warning that GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss and type 2 diabetes may cause a rare and serious eye condition.
elchi reports that the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of Australia has released a statement warning about drugs used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity.
The warning states that these drugs may cause a rare condition called “non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)” and adds that “NAION can cause permanent vision loss, including blindness, and there is no proven treatment to restore vision.”
The warning emphasizes that those using GLP-1 drugs should stop using the medication and seek immediate medical attention if they experience any vision loss.
This can lead to irreversible eye damage
The TGA stated that 36 cases of NAION associated with GLP-1 drugs have been reported to date. NAION is caused by a disruption of blood flow to the optic nerve behind the eye and usually appears suddenly and painlessly upon waking, and is often irreversible.
Used for type 2 diabetes and appetite control
GLP-1 drugs work by mimicking a hormone that helps control blood sugar levels and appetite, and are used particularly in the treatment of diabetes.
