The French parliament has approved a bill banning children under 15 from using social media. France has become the first EU country to impose an age limit on social media usage.
elchi reports that the bill, supported by President Emmanuel Macron and restricting social media access for children under 15, was put to a vote in the National Assembly after being approved by the French Senate.
Speaking at the session where the law was voted on, members of parliament emphasized that this regulation is necessary to protect French children.
The bill, finalized after months of negotiations, was approved with 279 members of parliament voting in favor and 81 against. Thus, France has become the first European Union (EU) country to impose an age limit on social media usage.
In a statement on the social media platform of the US-based company X, Macron announced that, “as promised,” access to social media for those under 15 is now banned. Thanking the parliamentarians who supported the bill, Macron emphasized the importance of implementing the law for the online protection of children.
