The death toll from the two major earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has reached 5,346.
“Elchi” reports that Jorge Rodriguez, President of the National Assembly (AN) of Venezuela, stated in a social media post that the number of people who lost their lives in the earthquake increased by 68, reaching 5,346, while the number of injured reached 16,740.
According to reports in the national press, the Venezuelan government has asked volunteers to provide DNA samples to identify the earthquake victims.
In a joint statement, the National Service of Forensic Medicine and Sciences (Senamecf) and the Ministry of Interior requested that families who believe their relatives may be in the La Guaira state, which was most affected by the earthquake, or at the Bello Monte morgue in the capital Caracas, provide DNA samples to facilitate the identification process.
The fate of the missing remains uncertain
Although Venezuelan authorities have not released an official statement regarding the number of missing persons, the website of the citizen initiative “Desaparecidos Terremoto Venezuela” (Missing Persons from the Venezuela Earthquake), where relatives report missing persons following the earthquakes, states that 29,500 people are missing.
Two major earthquakes have occurred in Venezuela.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that two earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 occurred in Venezuela on June 24, with a 39-second interval. In a statement dated June 26, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimated the direct physical damage caused by the earthquakes at $6.7 billion.
