Georgia and Azerbaijan have switched to a digital permit system for international freight transport

Georgia and Azerbaijan have started the process of issuing and exchanging electronic permits for international road freight transport.

According to “Elchi”, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia has announced this.

It was stated that Georgian carriers engaged in international freight transport will now use electronic permits in Azerbaijan, just as they do in Turkey. It was noted that a similar system has been applied to transport with Turkey since the beginning of July 2026.

According to Bakur Mikadze, Director of the Land Transport Agency of the Ministry, the digital system simplifies administrative procedures, accelerates data exchange, and minimizes the need for paper documents.

He stated that the issuance and monitoring of electronic permits make the management of international freight transport more transparent and efficient, significantly reducing the execution time of transport operations.

According to the information, based on the agreement reached between Georgia and Azerbaijan, 1,000 electronic permits for all types of permit documents will be exchanged for 2026. From 2027, it is planned to transition the system to a fully digital format.
