OpenAI announces its first custom AI chip: ChatGPT will now work more efficiently

Taking a strategic step to become an infrastructure provider beyond consumer products in the Artificial Intelligence market, OpenAI has introduced “Jalapeño,” its first custom AI chip developed in partnership with Broadcom.
elchi reports that the company stated in an official announcement that the new processor is designed to meet the computational needs of ChatGPT and the coding assistant Codex, as well as future AI systems, more efficiently.
Although final performance measurements are not yet complete, initial laboratory tests have shown that Jalapeño delivers superior results in terms of performance per watt compared to the most advanced hardware currently available.
OpenAI and Broadcom announced last year that they were partnering to develop custom chips that would support 10 gigawatts of computing power, and the first tangible product of this collaboration was unveiled on Wednesday.
Joining the ranks of companies designing their own chips by following technology giants like Google and Amazon, OpenAI aims to both optimize processing performance according to its models and reduce its dependence on Nvidia, which dominates the market.
The company emphasized that Jalapeño is not a general-purpose processor, but was built from the ground up specifically for modern large language models (LLMs).
