UNICEF: Half of the world’s children face at least three climate threats

A report published by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that half of the world’s children are facing at least three overlapping climate threats that endanger their health, education, and survival.
“Elchi” reports that as the climate crisis deepens globally, children are facing increasing dangers such as heatwaves, storms, floods, and droughts. More than 1 billion children worldwide are simultaneously struggling with at least three of these threats.
The report states that almost every child in the world, including those living in high-income countries, is currently facing at least one climate threat, and it is reported that 123,000 children will face more than six climate crises in their lifetime.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stated in a statement on the subject: “Children’s lives continue to be disrupted by the impacts of heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, and floods. Half of the world’s children are currently living with at least three overlapping climate threats that shape their daily lives.”
UNICEF calls on governments to take action
Developing a plan to better protect children, UNICEF called on governments and businesses to improve climate adaptation by reducing emissions and focusing on the services children depend on. Director Russell stated, “This analysis can help governments and decision-makers plan better and invest more effectively in resilient services. When we strengthen health and education systems and develop infrastructure with children in mind, we protect them from today’s climate threats and help secure their future.”
