The authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have urged the residents of the country’s capital not to panic following the detention of a ship near Kinshasa, which was carrying a person who had likely died from Ebola fever.

Patrick Muyaya, the official spokesperson for the DRC government, stated at a press conference in Kinshasa that the ship, which was traveling along the Congo River from the city of Kisangani in Tshopo province, was intercepted 65 km from the capital. On board the ship was a person who had boarded in the settlement of Pimu, located 1,200 km from Kinshasa. The individual subsequently passed away with symptoms resembling Ebola. As a preventive measure, the screening of all 200 passengers on the ship for the Ebola virus has begun. A mobile laboratory has been set up nearby to analyze blood samples.
DRC Minister of Health Samuel Kamba has denied rumors circulating about the death of a large number of people on board the ship.
The World Health Organization has announced that a control point has been opened for preventive purposes in Maluku, at the entrance to Kinshasa, to prevent the potential entry of the Ebola virus and to implement emergency response measures.
