UK Defense Secretary John Healey has unexpectedly resigned, citing the government’s refusal to allocate sufficient budget to the military in the face of “growing threats.” Healey’s resignation dealt a new blow to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government, which was already facing pressure to resign within the Labour Party.
“Elchi” reports that in his resignation letter to Prime Minister Starmer, Healey emphasized that the government’s Defense Investment Plan was “far below” the level required in this dangerous period.
The publication of this investment plan had been delayed for some time due to budget disagreements between the Ministry of Defense and the Treasury.
Hours after Healey’s resignation, Deputy Defense Secretary and former war veteran Al Carns also resigned, stating that he would not defend the insufficient investment plan. Carns’s name is mentioned as a potential candidate in a possible challenge to Starmer’s leadership. In his response to Healey, Prime Minister Starmer expressed regret over his resignation but defended the budget plan, claiming it provides “sustainable and fair” spending increases to ensure the country’s security. Following the resignation, Starmer appointed Security Minister Dan Jarvis as the new Defense Secretary.
