“Zangilan’s Master Plan is being developed in a climate-resilient manner.”
elchi reports that this was stated by Dunja Kovacic, founding partner of the Urban Planning and Design Agency, during her speech at the dialogue session titled “BBB Publication (TBC)” held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13).
It was noted that the main idea of Zangilan’s Master Plan is for the trees that have grown and formed over the past three decades to become a core part of the city’s natural structure, and for the built environment to be integrated into nature: “For this reason, a large part of the existing tree cover in Zangilan has been placed under protection. One of the main principles of urban planning is based on ‘cold air corridors.’ This approach serves both to maintain ecological balance and to make the urban environment more climate-resilient.”
She emphasized that work is continuing by building upon this heritage and applying a contextual urban regeneration approach: “Since a large part of the Karabakh and East Zangezur region is located in a mountainous area, this factor has become one of the key determinants in planning.”
