The death toll from heavy rains and storms that have affected various regions of South Africa since last week has reached 18.
elchi reports that the Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs stated that 18 people lost their lives in the storm that affected a large part of the country: 11 in the Western Cape, 3 in the Northern Cape, 2 in the Free State, and one person each in the North West and Mpumalanga provinces.
The Western Cape provincial government stated that more than 150,000 people were affected by the storm, mainly in the Garden Route region, and thousands were left homeless.
The statement also notes that more than 100 schools were damaged and about 150 main roads were closed to traffic.
According to national media, many farms in the Western and Eastern Cape, which account for a significant portion of the country’s agricultural production, were also flooded and crops were damaged.
