UN official: We must approach urban expansion with caution

The New Urban Agenda is about integrating informal settlements into urban plans and developing policies that address their needs.

elchi reports that this was stated by Anaklaudia Rossbach, Executive Director of the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), in her speech at the official opening press conference held within the framework of WUF13.

“I think that in the future, the real answer to the question ‘What kind of cities do we want to see?’ lies in the New Urban Agenda. The New Urban Agenda is a global commitment agreed upon by member states in 2016, exactly 10 years ago, at the ‘Habitat III’ conference held in Quito. This year, within the framework of the UN General Assembly, member states are reviewing what has happened in the last 10 years and what will happen in the next 10 years. The New Urban Agenda is very clear. This agenda talks about cities planned for people and for nature. It speaks of inclusive cities that leave no one behind. The New Urban Agenda brings housing to the center. It recognizes that land does not only have economic value, but also has an important social and ecological function. Therefore, we must approach urban expansion with caution.

The New Urban Agenda talks about compact cities, balanced density, and public spaces. It also speaks of cities planned by women, with women, and for women,” Rossbach said.
