“Azerbaijan Railways” CJSC (ADY), one of the AZCON Holding companies, continues large-scale reconstruction work on railway infrastructure to ensure traffic safety and reliable transportation of passengers and cargo.
According to the information provided by “Azerbaijan Railways” CJSC to “ADY”, strategic projects implemented in the liberated territories, which fundamentally change the transport map of the region, are of particular importance in this context. On May 10, 2025, the Aghdam Railway and Bus Terminal Complex was commissioned by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, and in August of the same year, regular passenger transportation to native Karabakh was restored after 30 years. In a short period, the demand for the Baku–Aghdam–Baku route has increased; nearly 4,000 passengers traveled on this route in the first quarter of this year alone.
Against the backdrop of growing demand and dynamic development, the modernization of existing railway lines is one of the priority directions for ADY. In this framework, major repair and reconstruction work is planned to begin on the Yevlakh–Barda railway line. As a result of the lack of major repair and restoration work on the Yevlakh–Barda line since 1967, the existing infrastructure does not meet modern requirements. Currently, the outdated infrastructure, which has been in operation for nearly 60 years, limits the speed of trains to 10–60 km/h. After the planned repair and reconstruction work is completed, the speed of trains in this section will be increased, and the travel time for passengers will be shortened.
Due to the reconstruction work to be carried out on the Yevlakh–Barda railway line, train services on the Baku–Aghdam–Baku route will be temporarily suspended. The last trips on this route will be carried out on May 9 and 10. After the project is completed, the railway infrastructure will be upgraded and adapted to the most modern standards for more reliable transportation of cargo and passengers, ensuring a more stable, faster, and uninterrupted railway connection. At the same time, safety measures along railway lines passing through residential areas will be further strengthened.
As a result of the reconstruction of the Yevlakh–Barda railway line, a modern railway infrastructure extending from Yevlakh to Khankendi will be formed. At the same time, this project will make a significant contribution to the measures taken towards forming an integrated and modern railway infrastructure across the country and will serve the more efficient and coordinated development of transport links between regions. Thus, the speed and efficiency of passenger and cargo transportation will increase significantly.
In addition, the construction of the Aghdam–Khankendi railway line, including the Khankendi Railway and Bus Terminal Complex, the foundation of which was laid by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, in July last year, is currently continuing rapidly by ADY. Once construction is fully completed, the commissioning of the Aghdam–Khankendi railway will also ensure the restoration of train services from Baku to Khankendi.
The measures being implemented serve to form a more reliable, safe, and modern railway network in the long term and are of strategic importance.
“Azerbaijan Railways” CJSC expresses its gratitude to passengers for their understanding and notes that the mentioned measures are being carried out to ensure a more comfortable, faster, and safer journey for passengers.
