24-year prison sentence requested for ‘First Lady’ in Spain

Tensions have escalated in the ongoing investigation into Maria Begoña Gómez Fernández, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The far-right Hazte Oir Association has demanded that Gómez be tried on charges of influence peddling and corruption, potentially facing a 24-year prison sentence.
“Elchi” reports that the far-right Hazte Oir Association, which accuses Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s wife, Maria Begoña Gómez Fernández, of four separate corruption charges, has demanded a 24-year prison sentence for Begoña Gómez.
Hazte Oir claims that “after Sánchez became Prime Minister, his wife used her political power to act in her own interest” and is demanding a 24-year prison sentence for Begoña Gómez on charges of “influence peddling, corruption in business, misappropriation, and abuse of office.” Hazte Oir, known for its far-right and ultra-Catholic views, has also requested a 22-year prison sentence for Cristina Alvarez, who was appointed as an assistant to Begoña Gómez by the Prime Minister’s office, and a 6-year sentence for businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés. In the indictment submitted to the court, Hazte Oir alleged that since Pedro Sánchez became Prime Minister in 2018, Begoña Gómez’s “corporate profile has grown in terms of influencing both the public and private sectors; she has been able to reach the heads of large companies through personal connections and has gained the opportunity to use state resources and opportunities for private, professional, commercial, or academic purposes.”
