Elchin Amirbayov discussed the progress of EU-Azerbaijan relations in Germany

Elchin Amirbayov, the President’s representative for special assignments, paid a working visit to the Federal Republic of Germany.

“Elchi” reports that within the framework of his working visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, Elchin Amirbayov, the President’s representative for special assignments, held meetings with Günter Krichbaum, State Minister for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Wolfgang Dold, Presidential Advisor for Foreign Policy; Alexander Eberl, Deputy Advisor to the Federal Chancellor for Foreign and Security Policy; Armin Laschet, Chairman of the Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs Committee; Mirze Edis, Head of the Bundestag’s Germany-South Caucasus Inter-Parliamentary Relations Working Group, and other members of the group; and Niklas Wagner, Director for Eastern Europe, Caucasus, and Central Asia at the German Federal Foreign Office.

During the meetings, the current state and development prospects of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Germany were discussed, mutual interest in deepening the existing partnership and elevating it to a qualitatively new stage was expressed, the importance of continuous high-level contacts between the two countries for this purpose was emphasized, and an exchange of views was held on identifying new areas of cooperation. The parties reviewed the prospects for cooperation in political, economic, humanitarian, energy, agriculture, information and communication technologies, defense and security, culture, and education, as well as other issues of mutual interest.

During the meetings held in the Bundestag, the strengthening of inter-parliamentary relations between Azerbaijan and Germany and the importance of planned contacts throughout the year were emphasized.

E. Amirbayov thoroughly informed his counterparts about the peace agenda and normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the necessary conditions for ensuring lasting peace in the South Caucasus region, the consistent political line and concrete steps taken by our country within this framework, large-scale restoration and reconstruction work in the liberated territories of our country, and the problems caused by the contamination of territories with mines. The German side, in turn, highly appreciated the significant progress towards normalization and the ongoing positive dynamic, and expressed its full support for the peace process.

Also, during the meetings, an exchange of views was held on the current state and development prospects of Azerbaijan-EU relations, the formation of regional transport links, and the possible role of the European Union in this matter. It was emphasized that the past year was characterized by noticeable progress in EU-Azerbaijan relations, and the importance of maintaining and further developing this trend in the coming months was highlighted.

The President’s representative, informing the other side about the contamination of our territories with mines and the problems arising from it, invited Germany, which actively participates in humanitarian demining on an international scale, to also support this field in Azerbaijan.
Within the framework of the visit, Elchin Amirbayov also held a round table with representatives of local think tanks and security experts at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) and gave an interview to the “Berliner Zeitung” newspaper.
