The lower house of the French parliament has approved a bill banning children under the age of 15 from using social networks. The bill was adopted at a night session – 130 deputies supported the initiative, 21 voted against.
Elchi.az reports that this was reported by “The Guardian”.
The bill aims to protect children and adolescents from spending too much time in front of the screen and the negative effects of social platforms. French President Emmanuel Macron called the decision an important step towards ensuring the safety of the younger generation. He has repeatedly stressed that social networks can harm the mental health of adolescents.
Now the document must be discussed in the Senate. If the law is finally approved, France will be the second country after Australia to introduce such an age limit. The law also prohibits the use of mobile phones in high schools.
The authorities plan to implement the new rules for new accounts starting from the 2026 academic year. Social platforms will be given time until the end of the year to close existing accounts that do not meet the age requirements.
The law directly prohibits minors under the age of 15 from accessing online social networks. However, educational platforms and online encyclopedias are excluded from the law. To implement the initiative, an effective age verification system must be implemented, and work in this direction is being carried out at the European level.
