Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will use all options to amend the constitution at Azerbaijan’s demand.
elchi reports that the Armenian newspaper “Past” published this information.
According to the publication, he confirmed yesterday that changing the Armenian constitution, specifically removing the reference to the Declaration of Independence from the preamble of the Basic Law, which contains territorial claims against Azerbaijan, was Baku’s demand. It was noted that this is one of Baku’s demands and preconditions for signing a peace agreement.
Pashinyan stated that the authorities must form public pressure against the opposition for the constitutional amendment to be adopted.
“Past” emphasized the discussions taking place in Yerevan:
“In general, Pashinyan came to parliament yesterday with another pre-announced agenda – for the draft state budget for 2027 to be discussed at a joint meeting of the relevant parliamentary committees. But the issue he spoke about was to achieve the adoption of a new constitution at all costs, dictated by Baku. He presented the issue in such a way that the opposition asks whether the adoption of the new constitution guarantees the signing of the agreement and the establishment of comprehensive peace.
Following this, Pashinyan made the following statement:
“If Armenia’s ruling majority clearly answers this question in the affirmative and provides convincing answers to the resulting questions, then allow me to express my opinion: if there are such positive answers, and we start the process of adopting a new constitution, the vast majority of Armenian citizens will go to the polls and vote in its favor. If we receive positive answers, and the parliamentary opposition opposes it, it will mean that the opposition is against peace with Azerbaijan. In this case, public pressure against the opposition will undoubtedly begin to form. I believe that Armenia’s ruling majority should lead this pressure.”
