A child has died from measles in a rural area of New York State.
According to elchi, officials told the Associated Press on Monday that this is the first death from the disease in the state in 30 years.
According to Governor Kathy Hochul, the child died in Lewis County, about 93 miles north of Syracuse.
The U.S. had stopped the spread of measles nationwide in 2000 thanks to high vaccination rates. However, in recent years, vaccination coverage has fallen below the 95% level required to prevent outbreaks.
Hochul called the child’s death a tragic reminder of the consequences of weakened public protection measures against vaccine-preventable diseases.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), three deaths from measles have been officially confirmed in the country this year. However, individual state authorities report higher figures. For example, five deaths have been recorded in Pennsylvania, and a suspected sixth case is under investigation.
In early October, Hochul declared a state of emergency due to measles outbreaks in neighboring states and rural areas of New York.
