Finnish President Alexander Stubb explained his decision to call Russian leader Vladimir Putin at this particular time by citing calls for European countries to participate more actively in negotiations amidst US initiatives.
elchi reports that he announced this at a press conference.
“There were many reasons,” Stubb said, noting that the opportunity for the call had been discussed for a year, and the idea for the call originated during negotiations in Oslo. Over the weekend, the parties deemed this moment suitable for the call, also because the Nordic prime ministers had already gathered in Finland.
“We had a strong feeling that peace negotiations had failed,” Stubb stated when asked about the reasons for calling Putin.
He added that the negotiations were conducted in coordination with Kyiv and Washington. According to the Finnish president, “direct messages” from Ukraine to Russia were conveyed during the conversation.
According to Stubb, Europe maintains its general course despite disagreements among participants on who should coordinate activities and conduct contacts. Finland and Norway decided to focus on closed diplomatic work and message delivery, he noted.
