The pressure on the leadership in the European Union (EU) is increasing. Following the problems with the use of “Starlink”, Ukraine is being asked to be given access to an alternative satellite communication system.
elchi reports that “Politico” has published information about this.
The discussion is about the “Govsatcom” system, which is planned to be launched in early 2026 to ensure secure satellite communication for EU government agencies. This system is intended to support critical communication until Europe’s “IRIS²” satellite network becomes operational.
At the same time, the capabilities of “GovSatCom” lag behind what “Starlink” offers; this means that the system in question can only play a backup role for Kyiv. Although negotiations between Brussels and Kyiv regarding access to this European infrastructure officially began in March 2026, no concrete results have been achieved so far.
Christophe Grudler, a Member of the European Parliament from France, stated: “I don’t understand why the European Commission and the EU member states are not doing everything they can to reach an agreement that Ukraine can benefit from as soon as possible.”
As reported earlier, against the backdrop of concerns about the security of European defense, the European Union has intensified its efforts to reduce its dependence on the “Starlink” satellite system owned by American entrepreneur Elon Musk.
