It is claimed that American billionaire Elon Musk has ordered a reduction in the speed of internet service provided to the Ukrainian army via “Starlink”.
elchi reports that sources familiar with the matter have told “The Wall Street Journal” (WSJ) that Musk instructed his company “SpaceX” to reduce the speed of the “Starlink” satellite system in Ukraine.
According to sources, last week Musk imposed restrictions on the connection speed of Ukrainian-made equipment connected to the satellite network. This has rendered some attack and reconnaissance drones practically unusable.
Two of the sources stated that shortly after the speed reduction was made public, Musk and former US President Donald Trump had a phone conversation about it. Another source claims they discussed the issue even before the decision to reduce “Starlink” speed was made.
As the controversy surrounding the issue grew, it is reported that “SpaceX” representatives contacted their counterparts at the White House to try to form a common stance. They suggested that there was coordination between the company and the Trump administration before Musk’s order. Sources noted that Musk consulted with several high-ranking officials, including Trump, before implementing the speed restrictions.
In a previous statement, Trump had denied reports that he ordered the suspension or reduction of the speed of the “Starlink” internet service provided to the Ukrainian army.
Musk, in turn, stated that the military version of the “Starlink” satellite network, “StarShield” systems, are entirely under the control of the US government, and any restrictions on speed or usage are ultimately determined by the US President.
