Leyen REFUSES to ease EU sanctions against Russia

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the European Union (EU) does not intend to lift energy sanctions against Russia until the conflict in Ukraine ends, despite the US taking steps to ease restrictions on Russia’s energy supply under the Donald Trump administration.

elchi reports that Leyen made this statement while speaking at a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

“In light of the current discussions, I want to be completely clear: these sanctions will remain in place until Russia ends the war,” Leyen noted.

The European Commission President’s statements came against the backdrop of Washington’s changing stance on restrictions in Russia’s energy sector. The Trump administration had previously eased sanctions on diesel fuel supplies from Russia and halted the imposition of a number of new restrictions against Russia.
