One of the executives at Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has stated that the company is prepared to implement time limits for teenagers following Meta’s call to take action on this issue.
“Elchi” reports that Snap CEO Evan Spiegel noted that setting a maximum time limit for young users on the app could be a significant step forward for the industry.
This statement coincides with Snap announcing a series of new features for its “Specs” glasses, designed to connect with Apple iPhone and Mac devices.
Meta wants other social media companies to adopt the platform changes it agreed to as part of a recent legal settlement with U.S. states.
Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, was accused by U.S. state attorneys general of intentionally designing its apps to be addictive for young users.
The company agreed to pay $12.7 billion and take steps such as silencing notifications during school hours, restricting usage at night, and implementing a standard two-hour daily limit for young users on its platforms, among other measures.
Spiegel stated that he believes this is a significant step forward for the industry in terms of setting standards and would be beneficial overall, adding that they are reviewing the terms very carefully.
As part of the agreement reached in August, Meta announced that if YouTube and TikTok follow the same path, it would implement stricter time limits and pay an additional $5.3 billion. The company did not admit to any wrongdoing in the settlement, which provides for payments over a 10-year period.
Last month, a Meta spokesperson expressed hope that Snap would also implement similar platform changes.
