Since the beginning of the crisis at the end of July, thousands of migrants, including children, continue to remain in the Spanish city of Ceuta.
“Elchi” reports that European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner has made a statement regarding this.
“Thousands of people are still in Ceuta. Among them are 2,000 unaccompanied minors,” the press release posted on the European Commission’s website states.
He recalled that in the last two days of July, nearly 80,000 illegal migrants crossed from Morocco into the Spanish city of Ceuta, which is equal to the population of this autonomous city, which covers an area of less than 20 square kilometers. Due to the crisis, Madrid decided to involve the military to help ensure security in the settlement. According to the authorities’ estimates, the vast majority of illegal migrants have already returned to Morocco. As Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated on September 15, in recent days, approximately 200 illegal migrants have been voluntarily returning from Ceuta to Morocco every day.
