International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi stated: “A world with more nuclear weapons and more countries possessing these weapons is not a safer world.”
“Elchi” reports that, alongside Grossi, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and Director General of the Russian state nuclear energy corporation “Rosatom” Alexey Likhachev also spoke at the 70th IAEA General Conference held in Vienna, Austria.
Emphasizing that the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) remains the cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime, Grossi noted: “A world with more nuclear weapons and more countries possessing these weapons is not a safer world.”
Noting that the Agency’s oversight of Iran’s nuclear program has weakened, Grossi said: “We were forced to recall our inspectors and — with the exception of an inspection conducted at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in June — we have not carried out on-site inspection activities in Iran for more than six months.”
Grossi reiterated that for more than a year, it has not been possible to ensure the continuity of data regarding stockpiles of uranium enriched up to 60 percent.
Stating that the Agency’s inability to obtain data on nuclear materials and lack of access to facilities for inspection purposes raise serious concerns regarding nuclear proliferation, Grossi called for a return to diplomacy and negotiations. Grossi also noted that unresolved safeguards issues regarding Syria’s nuclear activities, dating back to the era of the ousted Assad regime, have been resolved, stating that this progress was achieved thanks to Syria’s transparency and cooperation.
