Laws aimed at strengthening children’s online safety have been signed in California.
“Elchi” reports that California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation aimed at increasing children’s safety while using the internet and artificial intelligence, as well as restricting social media use for children under 16.
The California Governor’s Office issued a written statement regarding the laws aimed at strengthening children’s online safety.
The statement noted that Newsom signed the internet-related laws, which were approved by the state legislature with bipartisan support.
Additional protection for those under 16
The statement indicated that the laws aim to increase children’s safety while using the internet and artificial intelligence; it also noted that social media platforms are prohibited from offering additional features to children under 16.
It was emphasized that this is the first time a US state has implemented such strict regulations regarding internet usage.
In the statement, Governor Newsom, whose views were included, said:
“The safety of our children must be at the center of every discussion regarding technology. As innovation accelerates, our protective measures must adapt accordingly. The law passed today clearly shows that California will not stand by when unregulated technology puts our children at risk. Innovation brings responsibility, and protecting our children is paramount.”
