Azerbaijan presents a concrete example of how regional cooperation can move from political ambition to practical implementation.
“Elchi” reports that this was stated by the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Vladanka Andreeva, during her speech on the fourth day of the “Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026)”.
She noted that geopolitical divisions exist, and this factor affects how energy is distributed, delivered, and how we benefit from it:
“In this regard, I was very inspired by Azerbaijan’s planning of the submarine cable project passing through the Black Sea. This project aims to connect Azerbaijan and Georgia to the European electricity market via Romania. In 2024, the feasibility study for the project was completed, and subsequently, a joint venture was established with the participation of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary to advance this initiative. For me, this is a concrete example of how countries can think outside the box, connect with each other, and ultimately benefit everyone. Despite the existence of geopolitical divisions, this is a very concrete initiative. More examples of this can be shown.”
