Ireland intends to increase the residency requirement for obtaining citizenship from five to eight years.
“Elchi” reports that the “Irish Times” newspaper has published this information, citing a statement by Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
“As for the proposals regarding citizenship issues, this decision will allow us to align our rules with those applied in other European Union member states,” said M. Martin.
According to him, anyone wishing to obtain Irish citizenship will have to live in the country for eight years, be economically self-sufficient, and also pass a test on English language proficiency and basic Irish language knowledge.
It should be noted that a year ago, the Irish authorities increased the necessary residency period for obtaining a passport from three to five years.
