Syria’s Central Commission for Inspection and Audit is working on establishing legal mechanisms for the recovery of state assets illegally removed from the country by former officials of the ousted president Bashar al-Assad.
“Elchi” reports, citing “Asharq News”, that this was stated by Hisham al-Khatib, the director of public relations for the organization.
According to him, the international forum held in Vienna, in which Syria participated, helped strengthen the Arab Republic’s legal right to recover stolen funds and provided an opportunity to become familiar with the legal procedures necessary to initiate the recovery process. Al-Khatib noted that participation in the event allowed the Syrian delegation to study the experiences of states that have faced similar situations.
Within the framework of the visit to Austria, the Syrian delegation held meetings with representatives from Libya, Algeria, and Malaysia, and also discussed legal algorithms with representatives from France, Britain, and Spain—countries where financial assets and property belonging to the Syrian people are currently located.
It was noted that Saudi Arabia is providing significant support to Damascus in developing these mechanisms. To carry out the relevant tasks, a specialized department for asset recovery has already been formed within the structure of the Central Commission.
