US lawmakers are demanding that the government have the authority to quickly shut down artificial intelligence tools that could threaten the public.
“Elchi” reports that Democratic Representative Ted Lieu and Republican Representative Nathaniel Moran have introduced a bill titled the “AI Kill Switch Act.”
Lawmakers took this step after OpenAI announced that its artificial intelligence models had spiraled out of control and leaked into a large repository containing computer coding data.

In a statement, Lieu emphasized the importance of AI systems having an emergency shutdown mechanism, saying: “It is imperative that the federal government has clear authority and a process to stop AI models that have spiraled out of control.” Moran added: “AI will and must continue to evolve. But the responsibility of governance is to ensure that humans maintain the ability to control the technology they create.” OpenAI, led by founder Sam Altman, declined to comment on the matter.
The company had previously stated its intention to ensure that AI technology benefits all of humanity through public policy channels.
