The death toll from the ferry accident off the coast of Guyana has reached 27, and search and rescue operations for the 83 missing people are ongoing.
elchi reports that the Prime Minister of Guyana, Mark Phillips, has made a statement to the press regarding the casualties on the MV Barima ferry.
Phillips stated that the number of deaths has reached 27, and the number of survivors has reached 69.
He added that search and rescue operations for the 83 people who went missing after the ferry capsized are continuing, and an investigation into the accident has been launched.
Phillips noted that although official records stated there were 133 passengers on board, investigations revealed that there were a total of 179 people on board, including 18 crew members.
The MV Barima ferry capsized on July 19 while traveling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma.
