Google, part of the Alphabet holding, has connected the new transatlantic “Nuvem” submarine cable to the city of Sines, Portugal.
elchi reports that Reuters provided information on this matter.
The cable, which is approximately 7,000 km long, connects Myrtle Beach (South Carolina, USA) to Sines, Portugal, passing through Bermuda and the Azores. The system consists of 16 pairs of optical fibers and is designed for a transmission capacity of up to 384 Tbit/s.
Google noted that the project is aimed at meeting the growing demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence services, and is also part of the strategy for the development of Europe’s digital infrastructure.
The Portuguese authorities hope that the new cable will strengthen the country’s position as one of the main European hubs for data centers, artificial intelligence technologies, and innovation.
According to the company, submarine cables ensure the transmission of more than 95% of global internet traffic flow.
