Colombian President Gustavo Petro called the promise of the Abelardo de la Espriella government, to which he will hand over power on August 7, to restore relations with Israel an “insult to national honor.”
elchi reports that speaking in public in the city of Bolivar, Petro emphasized that he does not recognize the right-wing Espriella government, which won the second round of the presidential elections held on June 21, and that they will oppose it “in the harshest way in the streets.” Touching on Espriella’s promise to improve relations with Israel, Petro said: “They want to restore diplomatic relations with a government that killed 22,000 babies in Gaza with missiles. Such a government (Espriella’s government) embarrasses me. How can Congress allow the restoration of relations with a government that killed 22,000 babies? This is an insult to our national honor. This is not love, this is not faith, this is not believing in Jesus Christ. Applauding genocide is fascism itself. This is not freedom either; those who do business with a genocidal government (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) will do the same in their own country.”
In his last public appearance in office, Petro stated that he would not retire from politics after handing over power to Espriella on August 7, adding that a “strong” opposition awaits the new administration in the streets. Criticizing Espriella for calling him a “tiger,” Petro said: “There are no tigers in the free land of America; the few cats that exist are kept in cages in zoos. The largest cat in America is the jaguar. We are in the land of the jaguar, and as women and men of the people, we will all turn into jaguars to defend social reforms.”
While some of those watching Petro’s speech unfurled Palestinian flags, others chanted slogans against Espriella.
