The new UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan has started his duties

The new UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Dmitry Shlapachenko, has started his duties.

elchi reports, citing the UN, that Dmitry Shlapachenko, a citizen of Ukraine, was appointed to this position by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres with the consent of the Government of Azerbaijan. It was noted that Dmitry Shlapachenko has 28 years of experience in diplomacy, international cooperation, political and socio-economic issues, development coordination, peacebuilding, and strategic planning.

Previously, he served as the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan. He also served as a team leader for the Horn of Africa and the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) at the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and the Department of Peace Operations at the UN headquarters in New York. In addition, he held various leadership positions in Iraq, Kosovo, Somalia, Tajikistan, and Vienna.

Before joining the UN, he worked for the US Peace Corps and the OSCE. He also worked as an author on international affairs in Ukraine.

Dmitry Shlapachenko holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in international journalism and a doctorate in international relations from Kyiv University, as well as a master’s degree in political science from the Central European University in Hungary and a master’s degree in international relations from the London School of Economics in the UK. He also completed a fellowship program in international journalism and public policy at Duke University in the USA.
