The body of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in strikes by US and Israeli armed forces, will be taken to Iraq, where funeral ceremonies for Shia Muslims will be held.
elchi reports that this was announced by the official representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baghaei, at a briefing in Tehran.
According to him, officials from the two countries have already held “necessary consultations on matters related to the ceremonies,” and a special committee has been established in Iraq to ensure coordination with the Iranian side. In turn, Ali Akbar Pourjamshidian, secretary of the headquarters for organizing the funeral ceremonies, clarified during a press conference that the Ayatollah’s body will be sent to Iraq on July 8.
The Iraqi cities of Karbala and Najaf, where Ali Khamenei’s body will be taken in turn, are considered sacred to Shias.
