Cholera epidemic spreading in Sudan

A cholera epidemic is spreading rapidly in Sudan’s West Kordofan state.

elchi reports that World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote about this on his social media account.

He emphasized that the spread of the disease is accompanied by the paralysis of the healthcare system against the backdrop of the ongoing armed conflict in the country:

“Mass displacement of the population makes access to medical care even more difficult. Security issues and restrictions are delaying the delivery of emergency response teams to the region, as well as the distribution of medical supplies and humanitarian aid. 838 suspected cases of cholera have been recorded in the state. As a result of the severity of the disease, 117 people have lost their lives.”

The WHO chief added that the international organization, together with its partners, is expanding the network of cholera treatment centers, training medical personnel, chlorinating water, and taking measures to raise public awareness.
