The former special representative of the Russian President for ecology and transport, former Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov, has passed away.

Ivanov was 73 years old.

It should be noted that in February of this year, Ivanov voluntarily resigned from his position as the special representative of the Russian President.

Sergey Ivanov served as Russia’s Minister of Defense from 2001 to 2007 and as Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office from 2011 to 2016. In 2007, he was considered the main rival to Dmitry Medvedev for the ruling party’s presidential nomination.

Ivanov was a retired Colonel-General. From 1990 to 2000, he also held other government positions, including Deputy Director of the Federal Security Service (FSB), Secretary of the Security Council, and Deputy Prime Minister.
