The technology giant Microsoft has announced that its new quantum chip is more reliable than the previous version and that this will pave the way for a quantum computer capable of solving commercially viable problems within three years.
“Elchi” reports that quantum bits (qubits), which form the basis of quantum computers and have the potential to answer questions that current machines cannot solve, are known for their delicate and unstable structures. Microsoft stated that the qubits in its new chip, called “Majorana 2”, can live for an average of 20 seconds instead of milliseconds as in Majorana 1.
This means that the new chip is a thousand times more reliable. The technology giant compared this performance increase to the difference between a phone that needs to be charged every day and a phone that needs to be charged every few years.
Zulfi Alam, Vice President of Microsoft Quantum Enterprise, stated that by 2029, they will have a quantum machine capable of solving commercially viable and reasonable problems. However, Alam added that such a device would require millions of qubits, while the current chip consists of only 12 qubits, indicating that further breakthroughs are needed. Citing trade secrets, the company has not disclosed all the details of its discoveries to the public, which makes it difficult to evaluate the claims.
