UN: Azerbaijan strengthens its role as a regional hub for “green energy”

Azerbaijan is strengthening its role as a regional hub for “green energy”.

“Elchi” reports that this was stated by UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana in her video message within the framework of the 31st Baku Energy Forum.

According to her, Central Asia possesses rich renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, and hydropower, as well as a strategic geographical position connecting major energy markets.

Alisjahbana noted that to accelerate the region’s energy transition, it is essential to increase investments in renewable energy projects, modernize power grids, create a favorable environment for private investments, and develop cross-border electricity trade.

According to her, platforms focused on connecting regional power grids and knowledge exchange can help reduce costs, expand renewable energy projects, and attract investments.

the UN official stated that the Baku Energy Forum plays an important role as a platform for accelerating the energy transition by bringing together governments, international financial institutions, and development partners. She added that the APREC initiative presented in Baku during COP29 is of great importance in terms of strengthening regional cooperation and realizing Central Asia’s energy potential.

“I am pleased to announce the launch of the Roadmap for Azerbaijan on Sustainable Development Goal 7. This document covers priorities such as increasing energy efficiency, developing electromobility, and positioning Azerbaijan as a regional green energy hub,” Alisjahbana emphasized.

She also thanked the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) for organizing the forum and expressed her confidence that the event would be successful.
